Addressing Contemporary Challenges in Historic Districts: Strategies for Implementing Clean Air Zones
In this C40-led webinar, cities will exchange their experiences with and guidance for implementing low-emission and pedestrian-priority areas in historic urban cores.
A decade ago, the World Health Organization found Lima to have the most polluted air of all Latin American cities. Since then, the city has sprung into action to tackle this challenge and provide cleaner air for its residents. As part of this effort, the city, with the support of C40’s Urban Climate Action Plan Implementation Programme, is seeking to implement a Clean Air Zone in its historic city center. This has raised a central question: How can cities respect their historic cores, while also responding to the contemporary needs to improve air quality, reduce vehicle traffic, and promote safety and alternative modes of transportation?
This webinar led by C40 and UrbanShift will explore strategies that cities such as Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Madrid, and Rome have already taken to implement vehicle restrictions in their historic center, and offer guidance to those like Lima looking to advance this transformative approach in their own central districts. In this webinar, cities will exchange their experience with design, implementation, and operation of Clean Air Zone approaches, from low/zero emission zones, traffic calming measures, and large-scale pedestrianized areas. Through the lens of respecting and highlighting the historic nature of urban centers, the cities will offer their guidance and practical tips for managing the constraints and opportunities of transforming legacy areas to improve health and mobility for residents.
